Sentence for gbh without intent?

my 15 yr old son got attacked last october by an 18yr old. he had 2 fractures in his skull,bruising to the brain,and was put in an induced coma for 2 weeks! the lad in question has pleaded not guilty to the charge, but he admitted to hitting him. if he is found guilty will he get a worse punishment????
